What sealing actually addresses
Air escaping at the joints, seams, collars and boots where duct sections meet. That air was heated or cooled at your expense and then delivered to a crawl space.
It is a different problem from a dirty duct, and it needs different work. Cleaning a leaky system leaves you with a clean leaky system.
Signs it may apply to you
- Rooms furthest from the furnace that never quite keep up, in both summer and winter.
- A system running longer than it used to for the same result.
- An attic or crawl space that feels conditioned when it has no business being.
- Visible gaps, curling tape or a disconnected run where you can see the ductwork.
- Dust arriving quickly at a register after cleaning, which can mean unfiltered air is being drawn in on the return side.
What the national figures do and do not tell you
The 20 to 30 per cent range is useful for deciding whether the question is worth asking. It is not a diagnosis, and anybody quoting it at you as though it were your number is guessing.
Your house has its own answer, and it depends on how it was built, what has been done to it since, and where the ducts run.
How to find out where you stand
Sealing is not a service anybody should buy from a website. It depends on how your ducts were built, what condition they are in now, and whether the runs that matter are reachable — none of which can be judged from a page.
