When Is Air Duct Cleaning Actually Worth It?

Ask two companies whether your ducts need cleaning and you can get two confident, opposite answers. The useful version is narrower than either of them.

The short answer

Duct cleaning is worth doing when there is something in the system that should not be there — construction debris, years of accumulation on the return side, or material you can see past the register opening. It is not worth doing on a schedule, and it will not make a house dust-free. The question is always what is actually inside your system, which is why the answer starts with looking.

What to know

What cleaning does and does not address

Cleaning removes what has accumulated inside the ductwork itself. That is a real and limited thing. Where a system is carrying remodelling debris, years of pet hair on the returns, or material that has settled and compacted in the runs, removing it makes a difference you can see when the register comes off.

What it does not do is stop dust settling on your furniture. Most household dust is generated inside the house, by living in it, and it would keep arriving if the ductwork were spotless. Anyone telling you otherwise is overselling, and it is worth noticing.

The cases where it is usually worth it

After remodelling or construction. Drywall dust is fine, travels everywhere, and stays in ductwork for years.
When you have just moved in and nobody can tell you the history of the system.
Where pets have been shedding into the returns for a long time.
When you can see accumulation past the register opening.
Where airflow has dropped and a fresh filter has not brought it back.

The cases where it usually is not

A year having passed. A flyer through the door. A tidy house with a good filter, no pets, no recent work, and airflow that has not changed. A general sense that it is probably due.

None of those tell you anything about the inside of the system. In a settled, well-kept home the honest recommendation is often to change the filter and get on with your life.

How to find out which one you are

Take a register cover off — most lift out with a screwdriver — and look inside with a torch. Do a supply register in a bedroom and then the main return, which is where accumulation shows first.

If what you see past the opening looks like the inside of a vacuum bag, that is worth acting on. If it looks like sheet metal with a film of dust, you are probably fine.
